With its extensive portfolio of channels (ProSieben, ProSieben MAXX, Sat.1, Sat.1 Gold, Kabel1, Kabel1 Doku, SIXX), the ProSiebenSat.1 Group serves a wide range of different target audiences—a total of 3.5 million users. To stand out in the crowded market of entertainment apps and specifically increase the number of video starts and live TV views on FireTV and AndroidTV, ProSiebenSat.1 Digital GmbH approached us for support in developing an update for its cross-channel selection of Big Screen Apps.
Challenges
The goal of the FireTV & AndroidTV app update was to enhance the presence of each channel among its diverse target audiences on Big Screen platforms. Given the high user numbers of these apps, there was immense potential to be unlocked.
As part of our work, we collaborated closely with the on-site design team on this project. Our task was to develop a new, user-oriented design for all seven channel apps. Additionally, based on our target audience analysis, we were responsible for conceptualizing a new format for these apps.
Solutions
Working closely with product owners, developers, and other teams, we established a Scrum/Kanban process to streamline cross-team collaboration within the project. We developed a design update for all seven apps. To achieve this, we thoroughly analyzed the core identity of each channel and its respective target audience. To stand out in the competitive entertainment app market, we designed a user experience that prioritizes the live TV experience—the main use case across all apps.
Together with the internal design team, we redesigned the user interface and improved the search function. Additionally, we developed the “Highlight Stories” format, which provides users with inspiring content. This brought the familiar “Story” mechanic from Instagram and Snapchat to the Big Screen—a format we identified as the ideal teaser structure for short-form entertainment TV. By leveraging already established user behaviors, we were able to capture user curiosity and make short excerpts of relevant content more visible, ultimately leading them into a viewing funnel.
Impact
Through our collaboration with ProSiebenSat.1 Digital GmbH, we achieved a result that will generate long-term, substantial success. This project enabled us to deliver the best possible outcome for both stakeholders and the company’s 3.5 million users.
